Description

This is another test of the unbelievably good Nikkor AF-S 300 mm f/2.8 (D). In my previous test I was using a D7000 which is a bit passe' and has a pixel pitch of 4.78 um. On my D5100 (same pixel pitch) the rightmost 1/3 suffers from significant off-axis aberrations (an indication of tilt) and the image produced can be massively under-sampled. In order to rectify the issues I decided to get a modern CMOS cooled camera sporting a IMX571 sensor for this lens in order to get better sampling (and possibly no tilt). So with some trepidation I went on with my lens' routine test. As it happens it was Full Moon with passing clouds and as this could have been my only chance for testing in weeks I went for it.

Surprise surprise, the image is still way under-sampled with a median FWHM of 4.9", which for a sampling of 2.63"/px, yields a FWHM of 1.8 px that is only slightly better than the previous results (~1.6) but with the added bonus of a 27% increase in resolution. Better still, tilt is gone. This lens is really a keeper and there is just no refractor out there which can compete at the same image scale and focal ratio, period.

N.B.: the background mottling is due to the terrible background residuals due to both transiting clouds and Full Moon.
